In our work places like offices colleges schools most of the illegal sites are blocked and user can not access them. But in this way many legal sites brilliant sites communities are blocked from colleges offices schools and other places like libraries.The main sites blocked includes the most famous ORKUT SOCIAL NETWORKING SITE from google, YOUTUBE VIDEO SHARING SITE from the same google and many such sites just to save their overall bandwidth usage b’coz a people very very new to internet would be an old member of such sites.The current technique used for blocking is IP Filtering which is widely being used to block sites in countries like china,Saudi Arabia india for sexual and abusive contents. Blogger.com hosted blogs were banned in india & pakistan suspecting terrorism. Bellow are some steps to visit such blocked sites like orkut.com in workplaces.

1.ANONYMOUS BROWSING
These sites known as Websites Anonymizers offer proxy browsing where if you request for a webpage like orkut.com it’ll fetch the information from the site we requested for and display to us with in their own site. ISP gets an impression that we are accessing that Anonymizer site not the site which we really visited via that site.(here it’s orkut.com)But they may display their own ads on those pages that’ll become little tidy.They automatically use many inbuilt proxy servers for this. Examples of sites offering this are

Pruxy.com
kproxy.com(Kproxy.com-I use this to browse orkut & gmail in my college lab as they are blocked there-this is better than other proxy sites as there i could not login to orkut & gmail but this was possible here -one of my friends informed me about this.)

2.USE URL REDIRECTION TECHNIQUES
Use redirection services like TinyURL which give a unique link to any site. Just make blocked sites like orkut.com be pointed by such a unique URL like that aof tinyurl.This works b’coz such redirection sites make the adress bar blank while loading. For orkut.com i’ve just made a tiny url link http://tinyurl.com/3ndzn by clicking which you’ll land in orkut you can make any and many for any site you like by visiting Tinyurl.Com homepage.

3.GOOGLE PROXY-LANGUAGE TOOLS

Use language tools like Google Translator or Google LanguageTools to access restricted sites.Here’s what you need to do visit Google Translator and there you see under Translate 2 types of translations are mentioned in or. One is text translator which u ignore just after or there is a website translator. Just write the website name(obviously the blocked site you want to visit) at the text box just bellow the text ” Translate a web page:“. In the language selector box select “French to English” or any language to english or English to English if you still want the site to be in english and then click on translate. Now the intended page in english will appear as if inside google translator not the actual webpage so now we indirectly accesed blocked site as this translator site which is unblocked acts as a proxy. Trick here is that the site intended is in english but we need to translate it to english b’coz we need the translator site act as proxy so we used French 2 English in that translator.

The output link was like http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http://dishadow.blogspot.com&langpair=fr|en which was from french to english as indicated by “langpair=fr|en” and the site mentioned after “u=” in the o/p link is the site intended which is http://dishadow.blogspot.com here. If we do from english to english we’ve to write “langpair=en|en” and if we intend to view blocked site orkut.com then u=http://orkut.com resulting in total link http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http://orkut.com&langpair=en|en which can be used directly without visiting the translator sites. Due to this google translator is some times said as Google Proxy.

Other translator sites such as Babel Fish Translation Free translation Language Translation can be used to translate from english to english or from other language to english.

4.CACHED PAGES
Most search engines like Google search caches each site it indexes and such caches are pages with contents of website by deleting all stylesheets images etc. seach for site you want that’s blocked in google or yahoo.After a list oif results appear if u wanna see one then don’t click on the link directly.Just see some link “Cached pages” or like that near to the actual link. Click there to see cached pages.

5.BROWSE USING PROXY SERVERS
If a site blocks your IP and disallows you to visit that, then browse that link anonymously by hiding your IP to them in folowing way using proxy servers.Use a proxy server. You can get a list of available public proxy server easily by searching “proxy servers” at Google search. Such sites contain a huge list of IP adress and port number of the Proxy servers. Some examples of such sites are

http://proxy-list.org/en/
Search for the string “free proxy lists” with & without quotes at search engines like Google, Yahoo and directories like Google Directory for more such proxy lists.

Choose a proxy server(out of above list) and note down its IP address and port number.Then you’ll use these to change u’r IP to this IP in the browser only by specifying the browser to use a proxy and in proxy information enter this proxy IP & port No.(Real IP is intact-no problem)

In Internet Explorer, go to Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections -> LAN Settings. Select (check) the option of Use a proxy server for your LAN. Then key in the proxy server IP address and port in respective box. Click OK. Do that in all other browsers too. In Mozilla Firefox, go to Tools -> Options ->Advanced(Tab)->Network(Tab)->Settings(under connection label). Then select (click) Manual proxy configuration and key in proxy server information. Click OK . In opera Tools-> preference-> Advanced(Tab)-> Network(in left pane)->Proxy Servers(buttons)-Check the HTTP-Write IP & Port No. in desired location there.Click OK.
(proxy server information means IP of the proxy server and port no.)

Here we are using the IP of the proxy server and the site that’s blocked from our IP is accesed by proxy server’s IP which bypasses our IP adress and we get access to blocked sites.

Powerscarp(new working)

http://www.powerscrap.com/ is a new proxy+value addition site which allows users to log in to social sites like orkut myspace and others even tough they are blocked. This is different from a proxy site. When you’ll login to orkut through it by visiting that site and providing orkut username and password it’ll add a special toolbar at top of each orkut page which will provide a set of tools for power orkutting. Tough it’s in portugese it’s not difficult to use. Also if your colleges are using proxy avoidance filter this may work as it’s not a real proxy site but has all functionalities provided by proxies. Also in comments we are updating the proxy lists.

These tricks will work for sites blocked by individual organisation colleges and also that’s blocked by the nation. Some tricks may or may not work for some body.If a trick works then stop and if not go for other trick.

What is the difference between viruses, worms, and Trojans?

What is a virus?

A computer virus is a small program written to alter the way a computer operates, without the permission or knowledge of the user. A virus must meet two criteria:

· It must execute itself. It often places its own code in the path of execution of another program.

· It must replicate itself. For example, it may replace other executable files with a copy of the virus infected file. Viruses can infect desktop computers and network servers alike.

Some viruses are programmed to damage the computer by damaging programs, deleting files, or reformatting the hard disk. Others are not designed to do any damage, but simply to replicate themselves and make their presence known by presen\-ting text, video, and audio messages. Even these benign viruses can create problems for the computer user. They typically take up computer memory used by legitimate programs. As a result, they often cause erratic behavior and can result in system crashes. In addition, many viruses are bug-ridden, and these bugs may lead to system crashes and data loss.

Five recognized types of viruses

File infector viruses	File infector viruses infect program files. These viruses normally infect executable code, such as .com and .exe files. They can infect other files when an infected program is run from floppy, hard drive, or from the network. Many of these viruses are memory resident. After memory becomes infected, any noninfected executable that runs becomes infected. Examples of known file infector viruses include Jerusalem and Cascade.
Boot sector viruses	Boot sector viruses infect the system area of a disk; that is, the boot record on floppy disks and hard disks. All floppy disks and hard disks (including disks containing only data) contain a small program in the boot record that is run when the computer starts up. Boot sector viruses attach themselves to this part of the disk and activate when the user attempts to start up from the infected disk. These viruses are always memory resident in nature. Most were written for DOS, but, all PCs, regardless of the operating system, are potential targets of this type of virus. All that is required to become infected is to attempt to start up your computer with an infected floppy disk Thereafter, while the virus remains in memory, all floppy disks that are not write protected will become infected when the floppy disk is accessed. Examples of boot sector viruses are Form, Disk Killer, Michelangelo, and Stoned.
Master boot record viruses	Master boot record viruses are memory-resident viruses that infect disks in the same manner as boot sector viruses. The difference between these two virus types is where the viral code is located. Master boot record infectors normally save a legitimate copy of the master boot record in an different location. Windows NT computers that become infected by either boot sector viruses or master boot sector viruses will not boot. This is due to the difference in how the operating system accesses its boot information, as compared to Windows 98/Me. If your Windows NT systems is formatted with FAT partitions you can usually remove the virus by booting to DOS and using antivirus software. If the boot partition is NTFS, the system must be recovered by using the three Windows NT Setup disks. Examples of master boot record infectors are NYB, AntiExe, and Unashamed.
Multipartite viruses	Multipartite (also known as polypartite) viruses infect both boot records and program files. These are particularly difficult to repair. If the boot area is cleaned, but the files are not, the boot area will be reinfected. The same holds true for cleaning infected files. If the virus is not removed from the boot area, any files that you have cleaned will be reinfected. Examples of multipartite viruses include One_Half, Emperor, Anthrax and Tequilla.
Macro viruses	These types of viruses infect data files. They are the most common and have cost corporations the most money and time trying to repair. With the advent of Visual Basic in Microsoft's Office 97, a macro virus can be written that not only infects data files, but also can infect other files as well. Macro viruses infect Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access files. Newer strains are now turning up in other programs as well. All of these viruses use another program's internal programming language, which was created to allow users to automate certain tasks within that program. Because of the ease with which these viruses can be created, there are now thousands of them in circulation. Examples of macro viruses include W97M.Melissa, WM.NiceDay and W97M.Groov.

What is a Trojan horse?

Trojan horses are impostors—files that claim to be something desirable but, in fact, are malicious. A very important distinction between Trojan horse programs and true viruses is that they do not replicate themselves. Trojan horses contain malicious code that when triggered cause loss, or even theft, of data. For a Trojan horse to spread, you must invite these programs onto your computers; for example, by opening an email attachment or downloading and running a file from the Internet. Trojan.Vundo is a Trojan horse.

What is a worm?

Worms are programs that replicate themselves from system to system without the use of a host file. This is in contrast to viruses, which requires the spreading of an infected host file. Although worms generally exist inside of other files, often Word or Excel documents, there is a difference between how worms and viruses use the host file. Usually the worm will release a document that already has the "worm" macro inside the document. The entire document will travel from computer to computer, so the entire document should be considered the worm W32.Mydoom.AX@mm is an example of a worm

What is a virus hoax?

Virus hoaxes are messages, almost always sent by email, that amount to little more than chain letters. Following are some of the common phrases that are used in these hoaxes:

· If you receive an email titled [email virus hoax name here], do not open it!

· Delete it immediately!

· It contains the [hoax name] virus.

· It will delete everything on your hard drive and [extreme and improbable danger specified here].

· This virus was announced today by [reputable organization name here].

· Forward this warning to everyone you know!

Most virus hoax warnings do not deviate far from this pattern.

What is not a virus?

Because of the publicity that viruses have received, it is easy to blame any computer problem on a virus. The following are not likely to be caused by a virus or other malicious code:

Hardware problems	No viruses can physically damage computer hardware, such as chips, boards, and monitors.
The computer beeps at startup with no screen display	This is usually caused by a hardware problem during the boot process. Consult your computer documentation for the meaning of the beep codes.
The computer does not register 640 KB of conventional memory	This can be a sign of a virus, but it is not conclusive. Some hardware drivers such as those for the monitor or SCSI card can use some of this memory. Consult with your computer manufacturer or hardware vendor to determine if this is the case.
You have two antivirus programs installed and one of them reports a virus	This might be a virus, but it can also be caused by one antivirus program detect the other program's signatures in memory.
Microsoft Word warns you that a document contains a macro	This does not mean that the macro is a virus.
You cannot open a particular document	This is not necessarily an indication of a virus. Try opening another document or a backup of the document in question. If other documents open correctly, the document may be damaged.
The label on a hard drive has changed	Every disk is allowed to have a label. You can assign a label to a disk by using the DOS Label command of from within Windows.

What is safe computing?

With all the hype, it is easy to believe that viruses lurk in every file, every email, every Web site. However, a few basic precautions can minimize your risk of infection. Practice safe computing and encourage everyone you know to do so as well.

General precautions

· Do not leave a floppy disk in the floppy disk drive when you shut down or restart the computer.

· Write-protect your floppy disks after you have finished writing to them.

· Be suspicious of email attachments from unknown sources.

· Verify that attachments have been sent by the author of the email. Newer viruses can send email messages that appear to be from people you know.

· Do not set your email program to "auto-run" attachments.

· Obtain all Microsoft security updates.

· Back up your data frequently. Keep the write-protected media in a safe place—preferably in a different location than your computer.

Guide to Building a Basic Network

Building a home or small business network or LAN is one of the simplest tasks when working with PCs. So, do not make it more complicated than it needs. You can buy the few components you will need either separately or in a kit form. You will save money buy shopping around for the components separately. The kits will come with complete instructions for the first time network builder. This is a choice for you to make.

Let's discuss the few items you will need to start:

The Hub
Hubs are the basic connector for a network, as a junction for the computers to connect together. If all the cards are the same speed, 10Mbps vs 10/100Mbps cards, buying a simple hub to match their speed is ideal and most economical. If the cards pre-exited in the computers and were mismatched in speed, you should use a switch, a device that allows the faster cards to continue to communicate at the highest speed and not slowed by the slower card. Today, hubs are very inexpensive and the price of switches has fallen dramatically. (under $50 for a 5port hub and under $100 for a 5port switch).

The Network Adaptor cards
Although you will find older 10mb network cards around in the $15 price range, they are almost always ISA slot cards. I highly recommend you use 10/100Mbps network cards, now in the under $30 range and they are usually PCI cards, which dramatically increases data transfer speeds and performance.

The Cabling
Nearly all hubs and Network cards sold today are what is often called 10base-T or 100base-T. That simply means you use cables called Cat5, (sometimes called "twisted pair")... they have connector ends on them that resemble a telephone connector. The telephone connector is actually smaller, called a RJ-11 connector, while a 10base-T connector is an RJ-45. But, they are nearly alike, except for size.
Installation
All you do is install the network cards into each computer, along with required drivers for the operating system. The drivers will be included with the Network Adaptor card or they can be downloaded from the manufacturer's web site. Windows95/98 makes the installation of these drivers simple. Then, plug in an appropriate length cable to the hub, then cables out from the other two computers to the hub. Remember that if you are using a hub that you do not want a "cross-pin" or "cross-over" cable. These are special cables used to connect two computers without a hub. Typically the cable you require is a "patch" cable. This is all very simple, so do not make it too complicated.

Software
The only thing left to do is setup the software to let the computers communication. If you are using Windows95 or 98, this is real simple. On each computer, go to Start/Settings/Control Panel and double click on the Network icon. Click on the tab at the top that says: "Identification." In these boxes you distinguish each computer on the network. The top box, Computer name should be different on each computer, (for our purposes we will call each computer one, two and three, respectively). The Workgroup must be the same on each computer and you can use anything... "Workgroup" is default. The bottom box, computer description is not really important, but you must have something in the box.
Next, click on the "Configuration" tab at the top. You will need to click on the ADD button and then double click on Protocol. On the right side choose, "Microsoft" and then on the left side choose "NETBEUI." Now, the network driver has been installed. Now, click on the button in the middle of the window that says, "File and Print Sharing." Click on each one so that a check mark appears in front of each. Your network drivers are installed. Click the OKAY button. The computer will want to restart, allow this to occur by clicking on the Okay button that appeared.
Now, when the computer is restarted, double click on the MY Computer icon on the desktop. Right click on the "C" drive icon and click SHARING. Check the "Share As" button and check the share type as: FULL. Now click on OKAY. These steps are important on each computer. It is the same except for setting the Computer name, which is different for each computer.
The only thing left is to map the drives on each computer. This is done so each computer knows where to find the hard drives on the other systems. Open Windows Explorer. Click TOOLS on the upper toolbar, then map network drive. In the box provided, in the window listed as PATH, you need to describe the path to the hard drives on the other computers. Say that all computers have been setup now, you only need to type this in to the computer named "one": \\two\c This tells computer ONE that computer TWO "\\two" has a hard drive "C" at \c or: \\two\c
You repeat this on TWO to find the hard drive on ONE, with this line: \\one\c and of course it works the same on THREE.

How to easily speed up your BSNL BroadBand Connection

I just found this article which discusses 3 important tips to significantly speed up your internet access through BSNL

Dataone broadband connection / most other BroadBand connections like Reliance or Tata Indicom or Sify Broadband .

Tip 1: One of the major problems with BSNL Dataone Broadband connection is the DNS servers they provide by default. Most of

the time they are very slow and sometimes they fail to respond. I noticed that I am starting to spend a significant amount of

time in DNS resolution with Dataone connection, often it is larger than the time it takes to actually get the reponse. Here

is a simple solution to significantly speed up your DNS resolution.

Open up the network connection profile and edit TCP/IP settings. In the DNS server address fields, specify the following DNS

server addresses: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220
Disconnect the connection and then connect again. You are done.

This specifies third party DNS servers which are significantly faster than BSNL Dataone’s DNS servers.

Note: The service is provided by OpenDNS.

Tip 2: Firefox users can use FlashBlock extension to prevent downloading of Flash content by default, thereby significantly

speeding up browsing experience. You can click on the placeholder icon to display the original Flash content any time. This

is more of a passive tip in that reduces data usage to improve your overall experience.

Tip 3: You can try to increase your broadband bandwidth tweaking the TCP/IP parameters. The process is simplified by using

TCPOptimizer, a free tool. It helped me a lot but your mileage may vary.

Also, there's nice little tweak for XP. Microsoft reserve 20% of your available bandwidth for their own purposes. This also

affects your Broadband peformance. You can get back this 20% as follows:

Local Computer Policy-->Computer Configuration-->Administrative Templates-->Network-->QOS Packet Scheduler-->
Limit Reservable Bandwidth
Double click on Limit Reservable bandwidth. It will say it is not configured, but the truth is under the 'Explain' tab :

"By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this
setting to override the default."
So the trick is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth, then set it to ZERO.
This will allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 20%.

I have tested the above procedure on Windows 2000 , XP Pro , XP SP-1 & XP SP-2 only. But not tested other o/s.

This trick is very useful for those who cannot use this method because the have static IP address.

To start off, you need a direct connection to your modem and computer. If you have a router, disconnect it and directly hook up your modem to your computer.

1. Open up the command prompt by pressing Start->Run and typing in cmd

2. In the command prompt, type “Ipconfig/all”. This will tell you your current IP Address. After, type “ipconfig/release”. Keep the command prompt open for easy access.

3. Go to “Network Connections” (accessible through the control panel). Right click “Local Area Connection” and click “Properties”

4. With “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) selected, click the “Properties” button.

5. A new window will open. Under the “General” tab, select “Use the Following IP address”. Under “Ip Address”, put “10.0.0.1″. Press the “Tab” key on your keyboard.

6. Press Ok on both open windows.

7. Repeat steps 3-4. Under the “General” tab, press the radio button “Automatically Assign Me an Ip Address”. Press ok on both windows.

8. Go back to the command prompt and type in “Ipconfig/all”. You’ll now notice you have a new IP address.

It’s not always wise to upgrade your hardware every time you feel your computer is getting slow. Here are some easy tricks to get most out of your hardware (Originally posted in http://www.mobile-pedia.com)

1. Disable extra startup programs
Several items add up to the start up list when you install different software. Such programs are loaded when your system boots and remain in memory (RAM), they also consume processor power. Here are is what you have to do to make them go away:

Goto Start>Run
Type “msconfig”, without quotations
Hit enter key or click the OK button
A window will show up you have to click the startup tab, as shown in the figure
In the Startup tab you will see several boxes and some of them will selected (checked). All you have to do is to uncheck extra items that are of no use. If you run and antivirus program it is not recommended to uncheck it.
After making you choices press the OK button, you will be prompted to restart computer to apply changes.
After you restart you computer a dialogue will be displayed you can choose not to show this dialogue every time you restart.

2. Disable Extra Services
From the menu opened by msconfig command there is also another tab for Services. Click it and check “Hide All Microsoft Services” option. This option will display you list of third party services. Uncheck the services that are not undesirable. As usual you have to reboot to apply the changes on startup.

3. Adjust Display Settings
XP has a very cool looking user interface, but it consumes a certain amount of memory. To make it a little lightweight you have to:

Right click My Computer and select Properties
Click the Advanced tab
Go to Performance>Settings (have to click settings button in the performance section)
Uncheck all except:
Use visual styles on windows and buttons
Use drop shadows for icons labels on the desktop
Show translucent selection rectangle
Show shadows under mouse pointer
Show shadows under menus
Finally click Apply and OK

4. Remove Widgets and Background
Different third party widgets and visual styles like for Vista like look and feel make your system slow. If you remove such packages you system will perform better on CPU and memory intensive tasks. Selecting default and no wallpaper as background also gives better performance than that of heavy wallpapers.

5. Folder Browsing
When you try to browse folder Windows XP automatically searches for printer and network files. This is a performance overhead. To fix this you have to follow following steps:

Open My Computer
Click Tools>Folder Options
Select the View tab and unselect the check box for Automatically search for network folders and printers
Click Apply then OK and finally reboot to apply the change.

Install A Web Server On My Home Computer?

You are running a Windows Operating System.

You have a high speed Internet connection at home.

You are well patched, have a firewall, and are prepared to accept the risk of running a web server on your home based PC (Note: This is something I never ever recommend, especially from a user who is new to the realm of web server set up and security).

With that being said, under the Windows operating system you have a few options. You can install Microsoft’s Personal Web Server if you are running Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98 SE, Windows ME or NT 4.0. It’s relatively easy to configure and use.

On Windows 2000 Pro and XP Pro you can install IIS (Internet Information Server) and I recommend that you purchase an “IIS for Dummies” book. The “Dummies” series of books are usually a safe bet when learning something new from scratch. Please note that if you are running Windows XP Home Edition you cannot install IIS on your home system.

Other alternatives are to install and run Apache, which is free (http://www.apache.org) which can run under pretty much any operating system out there (including XP Home Edition). Again, an “Apache for Dummies” book is essential for proper and secure configuration (or use the documentation on the Apache site directly for free).

Hopefully one of these options will do what you are looking for. I still recommend that you pay a hosting company for a web space, and let them worry about the backend configuration and security settings; otherwise you are putting your home PC at risk by having these ports wide open to anyone on the Internet.
